CIM's Notes and Secure Email functionality provides a flexible and convenient way for various stakeholders to communicate and collaborate in the coordination of care for patients. We have, however, heard concerns recently regarding the potential of Notes and Secure Email being used to communicate sensitive information, such as notes about SUD treatment.
To reduce the risks posed by this sensitive information, we have recently implemented the improvements listed below.
- "Owner" setting renamed to "Visibility" to better reflect the fact this setting determines which CIM users can see the note or message.
- A description has been added to the "Private" and "Public" selections of the "Visibility" option to convey the effect of each respective option.
- When entering a Note in Member Search, the default visibility is now "Private" rather than "Public."
- A disclaimer has been added to both Notes and Secure Email composition forms that cautions users against including sensitive information.
- CAUTION: We strongly encourage users NOT to include highly sensitive information, such as Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment-related, using this specific note function. Emails and notes in CIM are designed to document information of an administrative rather than clinical nature.
